How this is computed (and what it isn’t)
For each school we run the /worth-it calculator with the home state set to Wisconsin — resident tuition, plus foregone wages, capitalized loan interest, and BEA cost-of-living on the skip-college path. The ranking is the 30-year projected net value of going vs. skipping and investing the difference. It ranks schools, not majors — and the major you pick swings that payoff by over a million dollars on its own.
What it isn’t: a list of “good schools.” It’s a list of good trades at resident pricing. Schools without real FREOPP earnings coverage are excluded rather than estimated; institutions whose earnings roll up from fewer than 3 reported programs are excluded as too thin to rank; schools verified closed since the IPEDS 2023-24 vintage are excluded by hand. Only NPV-positive schools are listed — the point is where the value is, not naming losers.
Questions
- What are the best colleges in Wisconsin?
- Ranked by what the degree actually pays back over 30 years at resident pricing, the leaders in Wisconsin are Milwaukee School of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Herzing University-Madison — Milwaukee School of Engineering first at +$3.20M. That is a different question from prestige: we rank the trade, not the reputation. 26 of 33 Wisconsin schools with real earnings coverage clear zero (FREOPP 2021, IPEDS 2023, BEA 2023).
- What are the best universities in Wisconsin for return on investment?
- Milwaukee School of Engineering leads Wisconsin at +$3.20M in 30-year net value for a resident, ahead of the other 25 schools that clear zero. Return on investment here means projected lifetime earnings measured against the full cost of attending — tuition, fees, foregone wages, and capitalized loan interest — not a selectivity score.
- What is the best value college in Wisconsin?
- Milwaukee School of Engineering, at +$3.20M of projected 30-year net value priced as a Wisconsin resident. Every school in this ranking is NPV-positive; schools without real FREOPP earnings coverage are excluded rather than estimated, so the list is shorter and more honest than a full directory.
